Currently, Sora exists only as a dedicated web application launched in December, which allows users to create AI-generated videos up to 20 seconds in length. During the office hours session, Rohan Sahai, OpenAI’s product lead for Sora, confirmed the company’s intention to integrate the technology with ChatGPT, though he declined to provide a specific timeline for the rollout.

“We’re actively working on making Sora accessible within ChatGPT,” Sahai explained during the session. This integration would bring together two of OpenAI’s flagship products, potentially creating a more comprehensive creative platform.

However, Sahai indicated that the ChatGPT implementation might offer different functionality compared to the dedicated Sora web app. The standalone application currently provides advanced features for editing and combining video clips, which may not transfer completely to the ChatGPT environment.

The decision to initially launch Sora as a separate application was intentional, according to Sahai, who explained that it allowed OpenAI to maintain ChatGPT’s streamlined user experience. “One of the reasons we launched Sora as a separate web app was to preserve ChatGPT’s simplicity,” he noted during the discussion.

While ChatGPT already offers image generation through DALL-E 3, a Sora-based image generator could potentially deliver more photorealistic results, leveraging the temporal coherence capabilities that make Sora’s videos so impressive.
