Google is rolling out AI-powered scam detection on Android devices that uses on-device processing to identify conversational fraud in real-time without compromising privacy. Initially available for English users in the US, UK, and Canada, the system alerts users to potential scams while keeping conversations private.

Google has begun rolling out new artificial intelligence-powered scam detection features for Android devices, specifically designed to identify and alert users to conversational scams that often begin innocuously before developing into harmful situations. The technology aims to protect users’ personal information without compromising privacy by using on-device AI processing.

Targeting Sophisticated Conversation-Based Scams

The new protection features focus primarily on conversational scams, which have become increasingly sophisticated as scammers employ spoofing techniques to disguise their real phone numbers and impersonate trusted organizations. These social engineering attacks typically evolve gradually, starting with seemingly harmless interactions before manipulating victims into revealing sensitive information or transferring funds.

“These features specifically target conversational scams, which can often appear initially harmless before evolving into harmful situations,” Google explained in its announcement. “And more phone calling scammers are using spoofing techniques to hide their real numbers and pretend to be trusted companies.”

To develop effective detection models, Google has partnered with financial institutions to better understand the patterns and techniques employed in real-world scams targeting their customers. This collaboration has informed the development of AI systems capable of recognizing suspicious conversation patterns and providing real-time warnings.

Privacy-Preserving On-Device Processing

A key aspect of Google’s approach is that the AI models operate entirely on the user’s device, allowing for real-time scam detection without transmitting conversation content to external servers. When the system identifies a potentially fraudulent interaction, it immediately alerts the user, who can then choose to dismiss the warning or report and block the sender.

The feature is enabled by default but only applies to conversations with phone numbers not saved in the user’s contacts list. This implementation balances protection with privacy, as Google emphasized that “users’ conversations remain private.” Only when a user actively chooses to report a chat as spam will sender details and recent messages be shared with Google and carriers.

Geographic Rollout and Expansion Plans

The text-based scam detection is initially launching in English for users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, with plans for broader international expansion in the future.

Additionally, Google is extending its similar phone call scam detection feature to all English-speaking Pixel 9+ users in the United States. This feature, first introduced in November 2024, processes call audio ephemerally on-device and includes transparency measures such as notification beeps at the start and during calls to alert all participants that the feature is active.

Unlike the messaging protection, the call scam detection is disabled by default, giving users control over its implementation. “You can turn off Scam Detection at any time, during an individual call or for all future calls,” Google noted in its announcement.

Part of a Broader Security Strategy

This rollout forms part of Google’s expanding efforts to combat online fraud and protect users across its ecosystem. Just weeks ago, the company revealed that more than one billion Chrome users have enabled the Enhanced Protection mode of Safe Browsing in the web browser.

“If you turn on Enhanced Protection, much of the additional protection you receive comes from advanced AI and machine learning models designed to spot dangerous URLs engaging in known phishing, social engineering, and scam techniques,” Google explained regarding its browser protection features.

The new Android scam detection represents a significant step forward in bringing similar AI-powered protection to mobile communications, where many users are most vulnerable to social engineering attacks.

Industry Context and Expert Perspectives

These developments come amid a significant rise in mobile-based scams. According to the Federal Trade Commission’s 2024 Consumer Protection Data Spotlight, Americans lost over $12 billion to phone and text scams in the previous year, a 37% increase from 2023.

“The move to on-device AI for scam detection represents a critical evolution in mobile security,” explains Dr. Simone Chen, cybersecurity researcher at the Digital Safety Institute. “By processing potentially sensitive communications locally rather than in the cloud, Google has found a way to implement sophisticated fraud detection while maintaining strong privacy protections.”
